Through the courses, programs, and services of the Continuing Education Department, Lewis and Clark Community College offers a wide variety of educational and learning opportunities designed to improve the quality of life for learners of all ages. The College offers credit and non-credit courses, seminars, workshops, and cultural activities to address the diverse educational needs and special interests within the community. Cooperative learning partnerships with numerous area organizations, agencies, and businesses integrate community and college resources to provide the highest quality educational opportunities available in the area. Courses are offered on the Main Campus in Godfrey, at the N.O. Steps and techniques taught by professional dance instructor Kaye DeBrock in this class makes learning to dance fun and easy for everyone. Studies have shown that Emotional Intelligence is a better predictor of success than IQ. Come to this interactive workshop prepared to learn, share, and have fun. Instructor: Rick Marshall CEPE 672 Managing Anger ![]() Often times strong emotional responses lead to undesirable behaviors. This interactive session will focus on anger management and conflict. Instructor and communications specialist Rick Marshall will challenge participants to examine elements such as what activates anger, how to diffuse conflict and create an empathic environment, and strategies for managing anger. Instructor: Rick Marshall CEPE 925 Experiencing Digital Photography ![]() Have you recently purchased a digital camera or are you thinking about it? This short course is designed to help you get more from your digital photography experience. Various types of digital cameras will be demonstrated and the merits of each type will be discussed. In addition, there will be presentations on choosing and using a printer and the computer requirements for digital photography as well as selected topics in general photography principles. The course instructor will be former Lewis and Clark dean Dick Snyder who been involved in photography for over 35 years. Instructor: Dick Snyder CEPE 926 Basic Principles of Photography Perfect for the new camera owner, this one-evening course is designed to introduce participants to the general principles of photography including composition, metering, shutter speed and aperture settings, focal length, depth of field, and film speed (ISO). Topics discussed will be applicable to film or digital photography. Discussions will also included the relative merits of various types of camera systems, both film and digital. Instructor: Dick Snyder Arts Enrichment CEAC 400 Art Exploration – Multimedia ![]() Fun, learning, and creative expression go hand in hand in this class! You'll explore a range of artistic styles and techniques in this "sampler" class using a variety of media, including ink washes, acrylic painting, watercolor and pastels, under the guidance of a professional artist and educator. You will also create your own class art journal. Materials and supplies (brushes, inks, paints, etc.) are included in the course fee. Instructor: Staff CEAC 404 Mask Making ![]() Masks have been made to honor the many faces and expressions of a culture for centuries. In this class, each student will make two masks of their own design using plaster and cloth and a variety of decorative items. This class will focus on the enjoyable process of crafting masks and bringing their characters to life. Mask making from various cultures will be introduced. Materials and supplies are included in the course fee. Instructor: Staff CEAC 549 Summer Art ![]() Birdhouses, butterflies, sunflowers, plant pokes, yard ornaments. Decorate your house and yard for summer with handmade things you have designed and painted. One project will be completed -- more as time as time allows. Instructor: Gloria Darr CEAC 524 Knitting: Cables & Colors ![]() Learn about knitting basic cables, including reading charts, and knit small items which can be easily completed in the allotted time. While knitting two more small projects you will also be introduced to Fairisle and Intarsia knitting techniques, which are different methods of incorporating two or three colors of yarn into your work. Learn to work from written patterns as well as from charted designs. Instructor: Judy Paulsmeyer CEAC 562 One Stroke Painting, Intermediate -- Roses ![]() One Stroke painting is the blending, shading and highlighting with one stroke of the brush using techniques popularize by artist Donna Dewberry. In this intermediate-level class, learn how to paint roses of all kinds using a variety of techniques and combine stroke to form a grouping. Materials and supplies are not included in the course fee. Supplies will be discussed on the first night of class. Prerequisite: Introduction to One Stroke Painting or permission of the instructor. Instructor: Vickie Hopkins CEAC 563 One Stroke Painting, Intermediate -- Fruits ![]() Use the One Stroke painting method to blend, shape and highlight all in one stroke, making painting quick and easy. In this intermediate-level class, learn the stroke you need to create fruit to decorate a variety of projects. Materials and supplies are not included in the course fee. Supplies will be discussed on the first night of class. Prerequisite: Introduction to One Stroke Painting or permission of the instructor. Participants will complete one scrapbook page for a female birthday. No painting experience needed. Instructor: Vickie Hopkins CEAC 465 One Stroke Painting – Easter ![]() Learn how to paint eggs, bunnies, baskets, and more in this class using the One Stroke painting method popularized by Donna Dewberry. Instructor: Vickie Hopkins Health & Fitness CESC 573 Basics Of Anti-Aging Skin Care ![]() Let a state-licensed esthetician (a skin care specialist) teach you about your skin, how it prematurely ages and what can be done to slow down or prevent the signs of aging. Discuss the latest non-invasive skin care treatments, what products are beneficial for improving aging skin, and what really works. This is a great class for anyone looking to improve the appearance and quality of their skin without medical intervention. Instructor: Sandy Barnett CESC 540 Kickboxing ![]() Kick it up in this cardio-based kickboxing class! Learn upper and lower body combinations on or off the heavy bags to give you a total body workout and get your heart pumping. Kick things up a notch with sports conditioning intervals, including jumping rope, jogging and toning segments, then wind down with abdominal exercises and stretching. Individual instruction makes this a great for newcomers, but will also challenge the most fit. Meets at the Jersey Wellness Center. In this introductory Smocking class, you will learn to create a gorgeous heirloom baby bonnet by hand smocking. Instructor: Carol Miller CEHG 451 Basic Home Repair I: Electrical, Plumbing & Mechanical ![]() Are you challenged by home repairs? This course will give you the knowledge and confidence to safely perform basic "handyman" chores such as small electrical (i.e., switches, outlets, fixtures), plumbing (i.e., leaky faucets, toilet float valves, gaskets), and mechanical repairs (i.e., maintenance and cleaning of refrigerators, furnaces, and air conditioners). In addition to safety for doing the repairs, learn how to deal with small emergencies such as seeing sparks, smelling smoke, or stopping running water from flooding the kitchen. In this course, you will learn to use basic hand and power tools, identify types of nails/screws/anchors and their appropriate uses, and discuss types of lumber/sheet goods and their application. Become familiar with basic carpentry skills that can be used in simple home repairs on walls, windows, and doors such as finishing and repairing drywall, re-screening a door, re-glazing a broken window, installing a deadbolt, and hanging shelves. Whether you use color or texture to pair plants you will have lots of choices. Prospective members must have good musical reading ability. A background in handbells, piano, or other musical instrument will be helpful; however, ringing techniques will be taught.
