What is Continuing Education at Lewis and Clark Community College? Continuing & Professional Education
offers a wide variety of short courses, workshops, seminars, and
programs aimed specifically at individuals residing in the Lewis and
Clark district. You may be seeking to expand your knowledge of a
particular subject, improve your professional skills, learn a new
hobby, or may simply be interested in an intellectual challenge.
Whatever your goals, we have the courses for you!
Back to top What are "non-credit" courses? Most Continuing Education classes are
classified as "non-credit" and are geared specifically to the special
interests of the community. Subject areas include personal development,
recreation, creative arts, and health and fitness, to name a few.
Non-credit courses are not transcriptable, and no
academic credits are awarded.
Back to top Who can enroll in Continuing Education courses? Anyone can enroll! Formal admission to
the College is NOT required for noncredit continuing education
programs. Classes are generally designed for adults who are 18 years of
age or older, but individuals younger than 18 may attend with
permission of the instructor or with a parent or other responsible
adult. Lewis and Clark's College for Kids programs offers year-round
enrichment programs for children as young as 6 months old (swimming) to
high school age.
Back to top How do I register? You can register for your course by
phone, mail, in person, and online.
Due to
enrollment limitations, it is
recommended that you register early--at least seven days before the
classes is scheduled to begin. Delays in registration may result in
cancellation of classes. In the event that minimum enrollment levels
are not reached, the class may be cancelled prior to the first class
meeting. If cancelled, every effort will be made to notify registered
participants by phone or mail and a refund will be processed. Payment
in full is due at the time of registration. To register, call the
Enrollment Center (618) 468-2222 or any Community Education Center.
Back to top Where are the classes held? Classes are held at the Main Campus in Godfrey; at the N.O. Nelson Campus in Edwardsville; at one of three Community Education Centers in Bethalto, Jerseyville, and Carlinville; or in one of more than 50 off-site locations in surrounding communities. Back to top What are the fees? The fees for courses vary and are listed along with each course description. Continuing Education programs are self-supporting and are not supplemented by funding or income from sources other than the fees charged for the classes. No financial aid is available for continuing education courses. Back to top Can I get a refund if I change my mind about taking a class? Refunds for are issued automatically if a class is cancelled for any reason or if you withdraw before the first day of class. Refunds generally require two to four weeks for processing. If you paid by cash or check, your refund will be by check. If you paid by credit card, your refund will be credited back to your card. No refunds will be made after the first class meeting. Back to top Are there other expenses I will be responsible for after I've paid my course fee? Some courses require students to purchase supplies and materials beyond what is covered in the course fee. You will learn about additional required purchases on or before the first day of class. If you'd like more information about a particular class, call the Continuing Education office at (618) 468-2824. Back to top Can I get credit for a Continuing Education course? Most Continuing Education courses are noncredit, though some are also offered for credit (i.e., Yoga, Aerobics, Pilates, Civil War, some Music classes). Courses offering an option for earning academic credit will be specially marked in the Continuing Education Schedule of Classes. Credit courses operate under a different fee structure and refund policy. Back to top What are continuing education units (CEUs)? The CEU is a nationally recognized unit of measurement of non-credit, postsecondary-level study. It was established the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET). CEUs may be earned for study in selected non-credit programs and courses in compliance with accrediting agencies. CEUs are designed for use where employers, relicensure agencies, and other authorities require a specified number of hours of study on a regular basis for career advancement purposes. Typically, participants can earn one CEU for every 10 contact hours of participation or portion thereof, if the course has been approved for CEU credit. Teachers who wish to earn CPDUs (Continuing Professional Development Units) for participation in non-credit courses must make arrangements prior to registration. For more information, contact Carla Coury, Director, Continuing Education, at (618) 468-2820 or ccoury@lc.edu. Back to top Who teaches continuing education courses?
