Ages 9 and up
Here Ye, Here Ye! Discover the world of magic at Lewis and
Clark at our camp. Students will be sorted into their houses as they
learn how
to repot dangerous plant species in Herbology, create their own Monster
Book of
Monsters and discover "magical" creatures that are in their own
backyard. Students will also learn balance and concentrations skills
using
martial arts in Defense Against the Dark Arts and sharpen their
measuring and
following recipe skills in Potions. All of this and more at our new
Harry
Potter Camp!

Detectives: 
Learning About Local History Through Archival Research
Ages 10 and up
Discover the hidden treasurers and mysteries of your
community as you become "history detectives" and unravel the secrets
of your home town. Learn basic techniques employed by historians as you
discover and decode historic documents of the past such as letters,
diaries,
photos, newspapers, and even interview witnesses to important events in
local
history. Taught by Edwardsville High School teacher and historian Jon
Parkin,
this workshop is designed to encourage creativity and citizenship,
combining
the latest research technology with old-fashioned detective work. The
class
will visit historical locations and archive sites on walking field
trips. When
your research is completed, you'll publish your findings to the
Internet.

Junior Explorers 
Ages 9 to 11
Here is your chance to join the Lewis and Clark Expedition and
become a full-fledged member of the Junior Explorers. Learn the history
of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition by training at Camp River Dubois, their
first Winter
Encampment. Applicants should be prepared to train as a member of the
Lewis
ande Clark Expedition by bettering your frontier skills, leaning to
serve in
the US Army in 1803-04, preparing your own meals, making
a journal, mending your uniform, identiyfing
various native plants and animals, and many more tasks. This week-long
camp
will be held at the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site and will be
inside the
interpretive center and in the historic replica of Camp River Dubois.

Digging History
Ages 9 and up
Dig in! For five days this summer, you can experience the
challenge of piecing together the past through hands-on
archaeology-based
activities. Learn about the field of archaeology and what
archaeologists do
when excavating, interpreting, recovering, tagging and analyzing
artifacts.
You'll create your own mock-archaeological site based on research you
do of
your favorite period in history and/or culture. At the end of the week,
we'll
visit a real archaeological site where you can apply what you've
learned.

Playing
at
History
Ages 9 and up
Test your skills in the art of decision-making and
investigate new ideas as you study important events in history through
games,
simulations and role playing. In this class taught by historian and
civil war
expert Jon Parkin, you'll learn about various methods for simulating
and
resolving conflict while discussing battlefield strategies and tactics.
You'll
re-fight famous battles in history using miniatures and small scale
models, and
simulate modern warfare with scale maps and unit counters. At the end
of the
week, you'll research and begin to design a game or simulation of your
own and
play-test your creation!

Meet the Instructors!
Sable Harp
...is
a student at Lewis and Clark Community College on her way toward a
career in library science. She is a passionate and devoted reader of
Harry Potter literature and loves anything and everything related
to
arts, creativity and literature. Her "magical" experience includes
working at Disneyworld's Magic Kingdom in Orlando.
Jon Parkin
...is
a social studies teacher at Edwardsville High School with over 15 years
of teaching experience. He has taught American history, civics,
physical and cultural geography, sociology, and world history. On
several occasions Jon has participated in archaeological digs at
Cahokia Mounds where he assisted in excavating and interpreting
artifacts as well as mapping the extent of some of the mounds and
features. He also enjoys participating in battle re-enactments and
stimulating the creativity of his students with simulated gaming and
role-playing exercises.
Chantay White-Williams
...enjoys
nothing more than finding clues and solving mysteries. She is an
English instructor in the Liberal Arts Department at Lewis and Clark
Community College and has degrees in English Literature as well
as English Composition that come in handy when trying to determine
"who done it"!
Brad Winn
...is
the director of the Lewis and Clark Museum at Camp River DeBois in
Hartford. The Lewis and Clark State Historic Site has hosted over
500,000 visitors since opening to the public last year. In that time
they have welcomed thousands of school kids to the museum site. Staff
and volunteers, including several teachers and former educators, will
also assist with the course this summer.
