Ages 9 to 12
Learn all about the amazing crawling, jumping, flying creatures that share your backyard from noted biologist and Lewis and Clark professor Patrick Dailey! Collect, label, pin and store insects for study and display, and use a field guide for identification (included). Get a close-up look at the amazing world of insects and how they interact with plants, animals and other insects -- right in your own backyard. Wear long pants to prevent scratches and poison ivy, and bring a lunch and drink each day. Hey kids, "bug" your parents until they let you take this class!

tLearn about the science of Entomology (the study of insects) from noted biologist and Lewis and Clark professor Patrick Dailey. You'll spend time in the field and in the lab as you learn how to collect, identify, label, pin and store local insects for study and display. Collections prepared by middle school students may be able to be used in high school biology courses that require students to make collections for lab credit. Ages 11 to 14
Want to splash around in a local stream? Then put on your rubber boots and join the team! Led by River Watch Program Coordinator Vera Bojic, you will make connections between stream life, water quality and the way we live in our watersheds through classroom and field activities in this fun-filled, interactive class. We'll visit a stream site to determine the quality of the water and the type of critters living there. We'll also take a field trip to the National Great Rivers Museum where we'll will interact with education exhibits and tour the Melvin Price Lock and Dam.

Dive into the fascinating world of freshwater at the National Great Rivers Museum! Travel along with Environmental Educator Jessica Pascoe from the National Great Rivers Research & Education Center and get to know the plants and animals that live in and near rivers. Find out where your drinking water comes from. Investigate the amazing and unique properties of water. Learn about the many threats that face rivers and what you can do to help. Movies, exhibits and lots of hands-on activities will reveal the many connections between people, water and land.

Computer Systems Technology     new
Ages 12 and up
Everyone uses computers these days, but what is it that makes them so amazing? If you want to know how computers work and about the technology “inside the box,” then this hands-on workshop is for you. Under the guidance of computer network and system technology instructors Joe Wilson and Barry Peuterbaugh, kids entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades will work with various hardware components that make a personal computer work as well as install and configure an operating system and utilities. We’ll explore the tools and technology that allow computers to connect to each other as well as to the Internet. And the best part of all? You get to take home the computer that you learned about and configured yourself!

In Focus -- Digital Photography Workshop   new
Ages 10 and up
Experience the fascinating world of digital photography! While this creative workshop focuses on the fast paced medium of digital imagery, you’ll start with the basics of taking great pictures – equipment, composition and lighting – then learn how to manipulate your photos in the “digital darkroom” with a computer and photo editing software. This course will teach kids how to enjoy healthy lifestyles while learning about Allied Health professions such as nurses, occupational therapy assistants, exercise scientists, and dental assistants and hygienists. Kids will work side-by-side with Lewis and Clark faculty in fun, interactive activities that emphasize nutrition, sensory awareness, wellness and oral health. Spy Academy   new
Ages 9 to 12
Join the Spy Academy and come along for a fun journey into the world of detection, spy science, and forensics. Over the course of five days, you will experience all kinds of cool science and take home a scientific project each day. Learn how to decipher numbers to send secret messages to your friends on the first day. Come back the second day for a fun-filled science-slueth program and learn how to dust for fingerprints. You'll join the Mad Science Bureau of Investigations on the third day to sniff out forgeries and counterfeits and see "what cannot be seen" by the naked eye! On the fourth day, you'll follow Sherlock's footsteps and learn what tracks and trails can teach us, and on the final day of camp, you'll be using state-of-the-art security methods to foil robbers and burglars!

Snakes Frogs & Polliwogs 2    new

Learn about toads, snakes, lizards and other crawly things.  Instructor Karla Pool will lead a camp filled with games, art activities, nature walks, and cool reptile information.  Enjoy visits with The Children’s Museum’s ball python and tree frogs as well as other animals. This camp will be held at the Little League Building (across from the Watershed). For ages 6 to 8.

Blast Off!    new
Ages 7 to 12
This action-packed week will focus solely on rockets and the physics of rocket flight. After learning the model rocket safety code, campers will build ten different types of rockets and participate in the launching of six different rockets during the week-long program. Children will be divided into three groups -- altitude trackers, launch preparation and launchers -- for all rocket launches, and will get the opportunity to try all three roles. Kids will also learn about NASA's rocket program, explore the concepts of propulsion and recovery systems, and learn about the galaxy.

Join the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a week of adventure, discovery and fun along the banks of the Mississippi River. Retrace the steps of music legends, riverboat captains, and early explorers as you hike along the river. Explore Ellis Island and discover the abundant wildlife.  Experience an outdoor classroom full of surprises at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary while building outdoor skills and making new friends.

Ages 8 to 10
Impress your friends and family with a Web site that you create yourself! You’ll research a topic of your choice, such as your favorite hobby, the latest fashions or your favorite sports team, then learn how to write copy, insert graphics and photos, and post your creation online. Along the way, you’ll learn about some great educational (and fun) Web sites, how to use powerful search tools on the Internet to find things quickly, and where to find great graphics and media resources that you can use legally. Note to parents: Kids will also learn Internet safety rules to help them have a positive Internet experience and how to remain safe when communicating online while learning research, writing, teamwork and technology skills. This class is taught by an experienced technology educator with special training in Internet safety.

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the standard set of codes used on the Internet to design and view Web pages. Knowing the language of HTML will help you understand how web site development applications work. It's easy to learn, even if you don't know much about computers! In this workshop, you'll learn the basic rules of HTML so you can begin developing a web page from scratch -- formatting text, adding images and links, and creating lists and tables -- or troubleshoot pages you create with other software. Instructor Stephanie Palen is an experienced Web designer and technology teacher.

Old MacDonald had nothing over on this fun class!  So come along--there are plenty of chores waiting for you as we experience life on the farm.   We're making butter, shearing the sheep, slopping the pigs, feeding the chickens, and milking the cows...well, sort of. Kids will develop skills in fine motor, language, cognitive learning, social interaction, and much more with hands-on activities.

Meet the Instructors!

Vera Bojic
...earned a B.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As the RiverWatch program coordinator for The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, she works with people of all ages to help educate them about and engage them in protecting Illinois' water resources.

Gloria Darr
...earned a masters degree in elementary education and has been an education consultant for 25 years. Gloria loves telling stories and has an extensive collection of children’s books. She writes songs for preschoolers and has directed many children’s musicals and plays.

Dr. Patrick Dailey
...has been collecting bugs ever since he was 9 years old, and now he collects and photographs insects. He has taught at Lewis and Clark for 20 years and has been recognized with two LCCC Faculty Foundation Teaching Excellence awards.

Doug Lindsey
...is a Learning Assistance Specialist for Lewis and Clark Community College and teaches digital photography classes for college students the Computer Graphics department.

Amy Macias

...earned her Masters degree from SIU Edwardsville in Instructional Technology and has been teaching in the Edwardsville School District for 10 years. 

Janet Mifflin
...is a park ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a graduate of SIUE at Carbondale. She is an outdoor enthusiast and environmental educator, and spends her free time traveling, camping, bicycling and hiking in national parks and outdoor areas.

Stephanie Palen
...received her business degree from Eastern Illinois University and masters degree from SIU Edwardsville. She has taught business at Roxana High School for six years.

Jessica Pascoe
...is the Environmental Educator for The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center. She has a B.S. degree in Biology and Environmental Science and was formerly the Ecology and Environment Gallery Leader at the St. Louis Science Center.

Barry Peuterbaugh
...earned his B.S. from SIU at Carbondale in Electronics and has been an Adjunct Instructor in the Computer Network and System Technology department at Lewis and Clark for many years.

Karla Pool
...has a B.S. in Early Childhood Education, a Masters in Elementary Education, and has taught in the Edwardsville school district for
7 years.

Joe Wilson
...holds B.A. degrees in both Psychology and Chemistry, a minor in the Biological Sciences, as well as an M.S. degree and Ph.D. work in Chemistry.  He has worked for the Food and Drug Administration in St. Louis, MO in addition to teaching Chemistry and Computer Networking courses for many years.
