Ages 6 to 12
Vanish a handkerchief into thin air! Write your own comedy sketch! Juggle rings and spin plates! Twist balloons into fun animal shapes! Each night you’ll be treated to new tricks and routines your child learned that day from the performing arts experts at Abra-Kid-Abra. The camp culminates with the performers putting on a show for their families and friends. The goal of this campus is to help kids build confidence, improve presentation skills in front of a group, and to have fun!

Let's Dance! Kinderdance  
Ages 4 to 5
Want to learn to dance? Join us for an introductory class in Ballet and Tap designed especially for preschoolers! Boys and girls will be introduced to creative movement, ballet, tap, gymnastics and modern dance skills while learning colors, numbers, shapes, words and songs. Wear your leotards and tights and bring ballet and tap shoes if you have them. If not, wear loose comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. Instructor Sara Miller is a certified Kinderdance early childhood movement specialist who has taught ballet professionally for 11 years.

Learn basic cartooning skills such as character construction, demonstrating emotion, developing a plot, making a villain, and basic box and speech bubble construction. Ages 13 to 17

Frida Kahlo did it, Dali and Warhol did it, and so can you.  Make a cool self-portrait to start or add to your portfolio. Learn proper methods of pencil drawing including value, shading, proportion and scale in the drawing studio of the Lewis and
Clark Art Department. Then use a grid to morph your image. Contemporary pop artist Amy Harmon earned her Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from SIUE in 2004 and teaches art at Lewis and Clark. Have fun and explore your creativity! Final projects will be posted in Art Online.

Art Buffet: Drawing 101    new
Ages 8 to 11

We’ll draw kids’ favorite foods and then eat them in this fun new drawing course.  In the art studio of the Lewis and Clark Art Department, we’ll explore line, shape, form, value and perspective using age-old techniques in still life and landscape compositions. Lessons will be tailored to meet the needs and potential of each student. Our week will culminate with an exhibition of our drawings for parents to attend. Students should not wear nice clothing.

Art Safari: Drawing in the Great Outdoors    new
Ages 10 to 13
Learn the fundamentals of outdoor drawing using a variety of media in a natural setting. We will focus on flora and fauna located on the Lewis and Clark campus such as dragonflies, damselflies and fish among the lotus in the lily pond. Students should not wear nice clothing.

Do you love to make stuff using nontraditional media? Then this class if for you.  Design your own personal logo and print it on a hat, fashion an elaborate clay bead to use as a zipper pull on your backpack or jacket, make a one-of-a-kind t-shirt, create a handwoven basket and more. Art Zoo: Animal Sculpture    new
Ages 8-11

Create sculptures of favorite animals with sculptor Snail Scott in the Lewis and Clark Art Department studio. Learn about the history of sculpture and of the use of our friends the animals as subject matters. Use wire, paper mache, recycled and found objects to fabricate animals that fly, lumber, swim, crawl, burrow or all of the above. Sculptures will be set up on display in the Reid Library Reading Room for all to see.

Ages 8 to 12
Are you an amateur cartoonist? Do you love drawing comic book characters? Join comic book artist Brad Keim for a class designed to help kids experience cartooning through a range of creative drawing exercises. Through expressive drawing, color and text choices, kids will learn how to create art that is both fun and humorous.

River Arts
Ages 9 to 13
The Mississippi River on one side and the cityscape on the other provide an exciting canvas for young artists. Students will create paintings, drawings and prints of sailboats and landscapes in an outdoor “plein aire” environment. Meeting at the Alton Marina picnic pavilion, the class will explore the marina area, staying a safe distance from the water’s edge. Camp with culminate in a weekend art show at the Jacoby Arts Center.

Learning to make exciting and fun food is what Kids in the Kitchen is all about! Young cooks will learn how to create easy non-cooking snacks while learning to read simple recipes, identify kitchen utensils, measure ingredients, and work safely in the kitchen. Learn about Spanish language and culture in a fun class that will introduce kids to basic vocabulary and the customs of people who live in Spanish-speaking countries. Kids will learn numbers, colors, the alphabet, greetings and other simple phrases through songs, games, cooking and other activities. The instructor has a background in art, drama and bilingual education and has lived, worked and studied in Mexico. Hola!

Quieres hablar español? That means, “Do you want to speak Spanish?” In this class, you will learn how to speak useful words and phrases in Spanish and learn how people in Spanish-speaking countries live. You’ll learn songs in Spanish, taste some Mexican food, and try your hand at various art projects and games. The instructor has a background in art, drama, and bilingual education, and has lived, worked and studied in Mexico for a number of years. The week is sure to be fabuloso!

Meet the Instructors!

Elizabeth Adams Marks
...has 25 years experience as an educational illustrator for publishers across the country. For the past five years she has been the K-12 art teacher for Lahr-Well Academy in Glen Carbon. She is completing her degrees in Fine Arts and Art Education.


Gloria Darr
...earned a masters degree in elementary education and has been an education consultant for 25 years. Gloria loves telling stories and has an extensive collection of children’s books. She writes songs for preschoolers and has directed many children’s musicals and plays.

Brad Keim
...earned his BFA from SIUC in drawing/painting. While attending SIUC, he had a comic strip for the Daily Egyptian university newspaper and the Pulse Entertainment Weekly Magazine. He is currently the editorial cartoonist for SIUE's The Alestle, and caricaturist for SIUC's Student Programs and Center Events.

Lisa Lucker
...has been a teaching assistant with Region III special Education Co-op for 7 years. She organizes a lot of student activities for students in many classes, and teaches cooking to special needs students.

Abra-Kid-Abra
...helps kids develop their persentation skills and their confidence by teaching after-school enrichment classes and summer camps. Curriculum areas include magic, juggling, animal balloons, circus skills, and comedy. Abra-Kid-Abra founder, Jeff Lefton, has performed and taught magic professional in the great St. Louis area since 1969.

Sara Miller
...is a Certified Kinderdance Early Childhood Movement Specialist. She teaches dance, gymnastics and creative movement to young children, and has taught ballet for 11 years at a local studio.

Susan Millard
...has been the Love and Learn Coordinator for the Carlinville School District's Birth to Three program for nine years. She enjoys cooking with her kids and likes to travel.

Chrystal Gallaci
...is an accomplished musician, vocalist and instructor of Spanish language and culture. She has lived, taught and travelled in several Spanish-speaking countries and has worked with children of all ages.

Yvette Booker
...is an award-winning local artist and weaver whose artistry has been featured at the St. Louis African Arts Festival, Jacoby Arts Center in Alton, and in the annual ArtEast studio tour.

Mary Willis
...is a talented artist and cartoonist who will graduate this Spring from Lewis and Clark Community College. This Fall she will continue her education and develop her love of teaching at SIUE where she will pursue a B.A. in Art Education.

Amy Harmon
...earned an Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from SIUE and currently teaches Design I and Art History at Lewis and Clark Community College and Drawing I at Jefferson College.

Jason Lux
...is a dedicated student of art who is finishing his Associates in Fine Arts degree at Lewis and Clark Community College. He has specialized in outdoor drawing for more than 15 years.

Snail Scott
...Snail Scott has been a sculptor for 15 years, exhibiting from New York to California. Snail earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of New Mexico and her Master of Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis.  Snail works primarily in clay, bronze and mixed media.  She has taught at Lewis and Clark Community College, the Nevada Museum of Art, Washington University, and the Cambridge Montessori School.
