Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI): A College Commitment

Lewis and Clark is committed to the principles of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI). Fundamentally, these principles focus on:

  1. The continuing monitoring and assessment of quality and effectiveness throughout the institution.
  2. A clear definition of goals, objectives, and success measures upon which we will base our performance evaluation.
  3. The regular solicitation of input and feedback from key stakeholders.
  4. Institutionalized, periodic and formal review of progress by department and division.
  5. The application of lessons learned into actions that improve the quality and effectiveness of what we do.

The implementation of sound assessment practices across the institution is a critical element of this commitment to CQI. Assessment involves the disciplined and continuing evaluation of our performance as educators, service providers, and stewards of the public trust. Consequently, our institutional assessment strategy concentrates on four performance areas:
 1) Learning and Academic Achievement, 2) Programs and Services, 3) Environment and Infrastructure, and 4) Operations and Management. These areas encompass all of the College’s programs, departments, operations, and mission-related activities, and define our focus for the assessment of quality and effectiveness. This is a big challenge that can be met only if CQI and assessment practices are embraced at every level of the College.
